01 February 2016 Kuwait

Recent medical records have shown that one out of every four Kuwaiti adults suffers from diabetes, Dasman Diabetes Institute (DDI) said on Sunday. The revelation came at a graduation ceremony of 41 Diploma and Master's degrees students along with 17 students of vocational courses in the field of diabetes, in conjunction with the Scottish University of Dundee.

In a speech at the ceremony, Assistant Secretary for Technical Affairs at the Ministry of Health Dr. Qais Al-Dwairi said that DDI had initiated an agreement with Dundee University in 2011, one that is reflective of the institute's ultimate aim of suppressing one of the most pandemic ailments in the country.

The agreement has set in motion initiatives aimed at improving lifestyle habits, as a designated educational course on diabetes is now being offered, Al-Dwairi noted.

The course caters to a broad group of healthcare specialists in the country, Al-Dwairi added, encouraging the specialists to dabble in the courses being offered as means of a part-time endeavor. The course gives those eligible an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the intricacies of the disorder, he said.

More than 260 students have thus far enrolled in these courses, contributing to more than 1000 projects designed to boost treatment of diabetes, he noted.
