132,646 People In Kuwait Cannot Read And Write - Paci

The latest statistics released by the Public Authority for Civil Information (PACI) revealed that 132,646 people in Kuwait cannot read and write while 925,518 just know how to read and write without any higher level of knowledge.

The report underscored the worsening public education in the country even though the government spends eight percent of the national budget for this sector, compared to the developed nations which spends only three percent of the budget.

This is attributed to the large number of dropout students who joined the evening classes, on which the government spent about KD 91 million in five years. Around 80 percent of the dropout students are from universities.

In a related development, Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr Bader Al-Essa said the situation of the local educational sector is similar to that of other Arab and GCC countries. He pointed out that what is happening now is the result of problems which accumulated over the years. He added this situation requires a clear plan to effect positive changes within five to 12 years, indicating this plan will put Kuwait on the list of the best public education.

Also, a number of educators underscored the importance of changing the traditional educational system currently applied in the country while denouncing the frequent changes in education ministers. They suggested seeking the advice of experts, establishment of an educational research authority, use of advanced technology to develop the educational system, provide trainings for teachers to improve their performance, and appointment of the right people in the right place.

They warned about the dangerous effect of the worsening situation in the educational sector on the national economy, indicating that low quality of education will have a negative impact on the economy.
