2 Killed By Man Who Lost Access To Fb
Two people died after a man went berserk after losing his Facebook access while a student who lost balance while taking a selfies fell 20 floors to her death in Manila. The incidents involved social networking and smartphones.
Reports said that the 34-year-old man went on a killing rampage on Tuesday in the sub-village of Pandan in Pangasinan provinces’ Agno town after he was unable to check his Facebook page because his smartphone was missing.
The man, who was said to be suffering from a mental condition, hacked to death Laulita Naranja, 63, and Hermenio Cabais, 52 using two machetes. The GMA News network said the man and his victims were all residents of the same village.
The report said the man had tried to commit suicide after the killings and that he was subdued three hours later. When asked by police why he had killed the two, he reportedly said he did it because he had lost his smartphone.
The same day in Manila’s Ermita tourist district, a 19-year-old student fell to her death after apparently losing balance or slipping while taking a selfie with her friend. Kristina Marie Pagalilauan had just had her hair done and was taking a photo of herself with her new hairdo when she fell from the roof deck of the Dahlia Tower of the Suntrust Parkview Condominium.
In a television interview, Senior Inspector Rommel Anicete of the Manila police homicide division said Pagalilauan sat on the roof deck when she fell. The officer said Pagaliluan’s companion was skimming over photos the two of them had taken when the former suddenly fell from the building.
The two grim events took place on Tuesday and involved to popular past time for Filipinos — social networking and taking selfies.
In 2014, Time Magazine gave the Philippines the distinction of being the ‘World’s Selfie Capital’, due to the penchant of Filipinos to take selfies. That same year that the recognition was accorded, a 14-year-old student fell to her death while taking selfies with a friend near the staircase landing of their school in suburban Pasig City.
Marie Rocello had just entered the sophomore year of her studies at the Rizal High School when she died.
