Taxis Should Use Meter
Ministry of Interior has agreed to ensure strict use of tariff meters inside taxis in the coming phase to standardize the taxi fares, reports Al-Rai daily quoting reliable sources. They explained that Ministry of Commerce and Industry received several complaints from the public regarding the exaggerated amounts charged by taxi drivers and had requested Ministry of Interior to handle these complaints and conduct necessary investigations. Both ministries agreed that the taxi driver should be issued a traffic citation for committing violations in this regard.
The sources affirmed that Ministry of Commerce and Industry is not in charge of monitoring the taxi fares but the Ministry of Interior is responsible for that. They explained that according to the decision taken by Ministry of Interior, the cost of hiring a taxi will be 150 fils.
The initial amount on the meter when the passenger enters the taxi will be 250 fils between 6 am and 12 am, and 500 fils between 12 am and 6 am. The meter will increase by 50 fils for every kilometer covered by the roaming taxi and 100 fils for every kilometer covered by a call taxi.
