Kuwait said Tuesday attempts to release a Kuwaiti student, who was arrested in New York because his mobile phone contained "illegal photos and videos," have failed but they have assigned a lawyer to follow up the case.

Kuwait permanent mission to the UN immediately contacted the official authorities in New York to inquire about the reasons behind the arrest of Nayef Al-Rashidi, which then appeared to be because his mobile phone contained "illegal photos and vidoes," Assistant Foreign Minister for Consular Affairs said in a statement.

Diplomats in the UN Mission and Embassy in Washington also contacted the officials in the US and the American embassy in Kuwait in a bid to release the student, he said. "But all these attempts failed because of the circumstances of the case," he said.

Kuwait mission to the UN and the family of the student assigned a lawyer to follow up the case before the judiciary, said the official, noting that the action was based upon instruction of First Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah. The assistant foreign minister said the ministry would spare no efforts to follow affairs of the Kuwaiti citizens.
