Four Women Suicide Bombers Blew Themselves Up In Northeastern Nigeria
16 people arrested in Shuwaikh fight in northeastern Nigeria Saturday, killing one other person and wounding 10, when civilian guards prevented them from entering the city of Maiduguri, said an official.
The women blew themselves up when they were stopped for a body search by self-defense fighters on the outskirts of the city, said Sani Datti, spokesman of the National Emergency Management Agency. Saturday’s morning’s attack was the latest in a wave of suicide bombings blamed on the Boko Haram Islamic extremist group that have killed hundreds in recent months.
Suicide bombers killed 42 people Friday in mosques in Maiduguri, the biggest city in the northeast and birthplace of Boko Haram, and Yola, 400 kilometers to the south. Nigeria’s 6- year-old uprising has killed about 20,000 people and driven 2.3 million from their homes.
The incident in the Dala Yazaram area of the city happened a day after at least 55 people were killed in attacks in the northeast, including 28 in Maiduguri. A local resident said he saw two female suicide bombers enter the neighbourhood of Dala Yazaram, some six kilometres (four miles) from the city but one of them was stopped by people nearby while the other blew herself up.
A spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said one person, a member of the civilian vigilante group assisting the military in the fight against Boko Haram, was killed and 10 injured in the blast. “Four female suicide bombers at about 7:45am today in the morning attempted to enter a Dala Ajeri area of Maiduguri but were intercepted by the civilian JTF (joint military task force),” Sani Datti said in a statement
