Google Launched Its Messaging App Allo To Counter Whatsapp

21 September 2016 Technology

When it comes to messaging apps, Facebook owned WhatsApp is the uncrowned king. With over 1 billion users, Whatsapp has trounced all its competitors by a large margin. And, Google has a while ago rolled out its messaging app, Allo, to counter WhatsApp. Let's see if Allo has the features to take on Whatsapp or not.

A striking feature of Google Allo is the built-in search, which allows users to search by just typing @google followed by the query. So, the users don't need to leave the chat window to search information. The AI-powered search is based on the Knowledge Graph of Google. Allo also comes with Google Assistant, the company's conversational version of Google Now.

Google has also extended its Incognito private mode to Allo app. Along with the customary end-to-end encryption, another important feature of Allo is that users can set time limits for their messages to self-destruct. Users can also link Allo to their Google accounts. Google Allo also offers country-specific emojis and custom stickers.

The basic drawbacks of Allo are lack of features like document sharing and Audio Calling, which are present in WhatsApp.

Allo looks to be a mixed bag in terms of features. Only time will tell if it can challenge the dominance of Whatsapp or not.
