Human Rights Day Celebrated Every Dec 10 With Different Theme, This Year Theme Is Stand Up For Someone Rights Today
Human Rights Day is celebrated every Dec 10 with different themes and this year’s theme is: “Stand Up For Someone’s Rights Today.” In a press statement, Kuwaiti Society for Human Rights (KSHR), pointed out the necessity to protect the rights of all humans, not just those you know or the groups you belong to.
In 1948, the United Nations (UN) adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. After two years, the UN issued a resolution for all countries and concerned organizations to celebrate Human Rights Day on Dec 10 every year. According to the society, everyone must defend the rights of an employee, Bedoun or disabled while avoiding discrimination against women or non-citizens in order to enjoy a safe, secured and honorable life.
The society fights for the rights of everyone as it works with various bodies to improve human rights conditions in Kuwait. This year, the society launched the ‘Shadow Report’ that talks about measures taken by Kuwait to execute the Arab Human Rights Declaration which was submitted to the declaration’s committee in the Arab League.
The report consists of 49 recommendations pertaining to several issues, such as laws which discriminate against women as it requested the government to remove all discriminatory laws for women to enjoy their rights in all aspects, in addition to affirming the importance of moving towards the implementation of ‘quota’ system.
Other recommendations in the report include urging the government to activate law number 67/2015 on the establishment of the national authority for human rights which should be financially and structurally independent and open on the civil community; lay down a national plan to protect and improve human rights and allow civil organizations to participate in its preparation and implementation; clearly define torture in national legislation in line with the Arab Human Rights Declaration; activate law number 21/2015 on children’s rights and oblige all bodies to implement it; cancel all decisions and circulars with discriminatory conditions or regulations in the health care aspect; and make education compulsory and free for all, without discrimination, especially in the intermediate and primary levels.
The society applauds and appreciates the efforts exerted by the government in presenting the first national report in accordance with the items of the Arab Human Rights Declaration, reflecting the government’s awareness of the importance of being proactive in implementing the regional mechanism for human rights protection. The society celebrates Human Rights Day with this report, while it works on promoting respect for human rights and basic freedom of citizens and expatriates, in addition to stopping human rights violations regardless of the status of persons who committed such violations.
