Kolkata : In one of the largest gold seizures in the city during the year, the officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence last week seized 30 kg gold in Kolkata. The yellow metal valued at Rs 8 crore, was being smuggled from Nepal. Air intelligence unit of the customs on Saturday seized 5.30 kg gold from a passenger arriving from Bangkok.

According to sources, working on a specific lead, Koolkata zonal unit of DRI intercepted a Scorpio car near Mohammad Ali park area on Thursday night. A total of 30 gold bars were recovered from two specially made secret cavities in the car. DRI officials have arrested two persons connected to the case. Normally, the carriers from Nepal break the bars and melt them to form jewellery. Later they sneak into India wearing those ornaments. But this time they have changed the modus operandi and carried gold bars.

This is the second largest seizure of gold through the land route in Bengal during the current year. Earlier in March DRI officials had seized 87kg gold near Siliguri.
