r he was appointed Minister of Social Affairs and Labor (between April 20, 1990 and Oct 17, 1992), Sheikh Nawaf set up a special care hospital and created a new post; assistant undersecretary for legal affairs. In October 1994, His Highness Sheikh Nawaf was named Deputy Chief of the National Guards, serving in the Guards till July 2003, when he was re-appointed as Minister of Interior, as well as the First Deputy Prime Minister. He continued holding these posts till he was proclaimed Heir Apparent in 2006.
Sheikh Nawaf has encouraged young citizens to join military ranks, played a major role in the “Kuwaitization policy,” staffi ng the administrations with nationals, replacing expatriates. Among his major accomplishments was transformation of Hawally, which was a small village, into a residential district bustling with commercial and economic facilities.
Since he had taken the interior portfolio, His Highness had been preoccupied with maintaining the homeland security and stability. The MoI during his era witnessed a wide-scale overhaul covering security and police sectors, in addition to drawing up an integrated security strategy aimed at combating crime. He had also worked out a strategy for protecting the borders, national sea territorial waters and the islands.

At the defense level, His Highness the Heir Apparent embarked on a major upgrading plan, equipping the forces with modern arms and equipment. Meanwhile, His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al- Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah is a strong and true visionary leader, said Deputy Chief of the Kuwait National Guard (KNG) Sheikh Meshaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al- Sabah Friday.
In a press release to KUNA on the 10th anniversary of His Highness the Crown Prince assumption of post, Sheikh Meshaal lauded Sheikh Nawaf’s efforts in laying the cornerstone of the security apparatus and system in Kuwait, affi rming that decisions undertaken by His Highness came as a result of his strong and decisive judgment which always focused on benefi ting of Kuwait and its people.
His Highness Sheikh Nawaf comes from a line of great Kuwaiti leaders whom he had learned a lot from, said the senior offi cial. He affi rmed that His Highness the Crown Prince, along with His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, will continue to lead Kuwaiti into a bright hopeful future.
In the meantime, His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, through his long and illustrious career, has refl ected how a true statesman should act in service of his country, said Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Sabah Al-Salem Al-Humoud Al- Sabah on Friday. Speaking to KUNA on the 10th anniversary of His Highness the Crown Prince assumption of post, Sheikh Salman said His Highness Sheikh Nawaf has always left a strong impression throughout his career as a statesman.
His Highness Sheikh Nawaf played an integral part in the development of Kuwait in the previous half century, said the minister, adding that the Crown Prince benefi ted greatly from the experience of former leaders of Kuwait, namely His Highness the late Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and His Highness Father Amir Sheikh Saad Al- Abdullah Al-Sabah.
His Highness Sheikh Nawaf played an important role in the development of Hawally when he was governor in the 1960s and played a major role in safeguarding Kuwait against the threat of terrorism during the 1980s, and has continued to carry on the responsibility of leading the country towards further development, said the minister. Alongside His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, His Highness Sheikh Nawaf is taking Kuwait into the future, said Sheikh Salman.
