Kuwait To Add 2 Additional Patriot Fire Bases

27 April 2016 Kuwait

Kuwait intends to establish two additional Patriot fire bases, reports IHS Jane’s Defence Weekly. This was confirmed in documents that the US Federal Business Opportunities (FBO) published on its website on April 19m 2016.

According to the report, the pre-solicitation notice released by the FBO revealed that the US Army Corps of Engineers will solicit companies interested in bidding for a contract for the construction of the two air defence sites at Ahmed Al-Jaber Air Base and Ali Al-Salem Air Base, as well as improvements to the existing Air Operations Centre in Wista in the south of Kuwait city.

The report also clarified that the documents did not identify the systems which will be deployed at the new sites, but they included plans and images showing they will be very similar to Kuwait’s five existing Patriot fi re bases. Like the existing fi re bases, the new ones will have five pads for launchers, a raised area for the radar, an engagement control station, a communications tower, and various support structures. The main difference will be that the new launcher pads will be oriented towards Iran rather than towards Iraq like the ones that were built in the 1990s.
