Kuwait Urged To Review Airport Security Controls Without Delay
The United States of America and Britain have requested Kuwait to review the security controls implemented in Kuwait International Airport without delay, reports Al-Shahed daily quoting informed sources.
They explained that the intelligence agencies of those countries have advised their Kuwaiti counterpart to take necessary precautions inside the airport because of some loopholes that must be addressed immediately. According to these agencies, half of the Kuwaiti airport is significantly threatened due to lack of security measures from the gates of entry to the baggage area as well as the weakness of the monitoring system with the use of outdated cameras that are not useful in consideration of the current situation.
Based on the warnings, the sources said the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) took the decision to replace surveillance system with a new one, based on the security and safety plan developed by DGCA to ensure airport security. They affirmed that DGCA will start the process of replacing the cameras next year.
The sources also revealed the shortcomings in the procedures for qualifying global manufacturers of the design project, supply and operation, training services, maintenance, technical support and information exchange network at Kuwait International Airport.
They stressed that DGCA qualified international companies within the country, which prompted the Central Tenders Committee to cancel the bid more than once due to which there was only a single bidder, which resulted in the delay in completing the project as scheduled. The sources said the monitoring bodies requested DGCA to reconsider the method used for qualifying companies and to seek expertise that commensurate with the work.
Meanwhile, the joint security coordination between Kuwait and the rest of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries has come a long way in developing mechanisms for rooting out terrorism and eradicating sleeper cells, reports Al-Shahed daily quoting informed sources. They revealed that the concerned security authorities, during their last meeting in Doha, have agreed to fight deviant thought and to coordinate for eliminating terrorism.
The sources explained that the interior ministers have agreed to pursue instigators of the young people and arrest those who run fake accounts on social media. An agreement has been signed to activate surveillance in all GCC ports and establish a blacklist of suspects to track them down and arrest them.
They indicated that the Gulf security authorities have completed the establishment of a joint control room based in Abu Dhabi which will work round the clock to receive communications from security authorities and will assign officers from all GCC countries to work in that room as liaison officers.
The sources added that the interior ministers have agreed on the prosecution of sleeper cells affiliated to terrorist organizations all over the world and they also agreed to fight money laundering and control the financial sources of terrorism.
