Majority Of People Feel Safe, Secure In Kuwait

03 November 2016 Kuwait

In this week’s Arab Times online poll, readers shared the sense and degree of safety they feel in Kuwait.

The majority of voters attested to feeling a high degree of safety and security in Kuwait. Kuwait ranks at 51 in the Global Peace Index and comes in second regionally after Qatar.

Despite the terrorist attack of June 2015, where a terrorist bombing occurred at the Imam Al-Sadiq Mosque in Kuwait City, killing 27 and injuring hundreds more, 35% of voters consider the country to be very safe.

Most feel that past attacks and attempts have not changed the way they engage with the city or have had any major impact on their lives. “I think Kuwait is a very safe and peaceful place. It is very hard to be paranoid about attacks here in our everyday life. We have lived here for decades without having to worry about our safety. One attack isn’t going to change all that”, a reader shared.

Another 30% voters felt resigned to the fact that no place in the world is safe anymore. “Security threats and attacks have become so commonplace in our world today. With the reach of media these days, we hear of so many attacks around the world. You cannot live in fear of this.”

15% of the respondents felt comforted by the increase in police presence on the roads and neighbourhoods. “It is good to see more policemen out in the streets and around sensitive and crowded areas. I think this would deter those planning attacks and increase their chances of failure”, a respondent told the Arab Times.

12% of those who voted shared that they were very concerned about their safety and consider terrorism a critical threat and another 8% feel that a terror attack is imminent and are very cautious of their surroundings and suspicious of people.

“I think in today’s world, everybody should practice some personal security measures. We have to be aware of our surroundings and observant at all times. If you see anything suspicious, it is better to report it to the authorities and be safe than dismiss it and be sorry.”

“I avoid crowded areas during holidays and other peak times because I feel unsafe there. The security measures at shopping malls and other public spaces are not up to a reassuring standard”, a voter shared.

“The reports of the Ministry of Interior hunting down and catching terror suspects is as reassuring as it troubling. I commend the security forces in the country for being vigilant but the fact that there are a number of homegrown terrorists waiting and working to cause destruction is very unnerving”.
