More Than 50 Percent Of The Kuwaitis Eligible To Work Are Not Part Of Labor Market

54.3 pct of Kuwaitis who are eligible to work are unemployed. The rate is almost the same for those who prefer to work in the public sector rather than the private sector, reports Al-Rai daily. A survey on the labor market prepared by the Central Statistics Department for 2014 indicates that only 32.8 percent of the population of Kuwait is Kuwaitis, with 28.3 percent of men and 39 percent of women.

Unemployment among Kuwaitis has increased to 5 percent in 2014 compared to 4.8 percent in 2008. About 54.3 percent of the Kuwaitis who are eligible to work are not part of the country’s labor market – 45.8 percent of them are men and 62.4 percent are women. Among them, 49.2 percent will soon look for employment opportunities while 22.5 percent will continue to remain unemployed.

About 22.9 percent of the total unemployed Kuwaitis who are eligible to work are between the ages of 15 and 24. While 44 percent of unemployed Kuwaitis do not accept jobs in the private sector, the rate of Kuwaitis currently working in the public sector has reached 84.1 percent.

The statistics prepared between October and December of 2014 concerning employment on the basis of nationality in the public sector indicates that 77.2 percent of the employees are Kuwaitis, 14.5 percent Arab nationals and 6.8 percent Asian nationals. In the private sector, about 58.4 percent are Asian employees, followed by 34.6 percent Arabs and 5.2 percent Kuwaitis. However, in terms of academic level, the national manpower in the private sector has higher academic qualifications compared to the non- Kuwaitis.

Those with university degrees constitute 43.3 percent, while 35.6 percent hold secondary level certificates and 32.3 percent hold primary certificates. Regarding distribution rate of employees across sectors, the report revealed 84.1 percent of national manpower work in the government sector, 5.8 percent of them work in establishments owned by the government, and 9.8 percent of them work in the private sector.

On the other hand, 7.8 percent of non-Kuwaitis work in the government sector, 4.2 percent of them work in establishments owned by the government and 69.4 percent of them work in the private sector.
