Mother, Daughter Drown As Vehicle Swept Away
A 25-year-old Emirati woman has drowned with her 11-year-old daughter after the vehicle in which the family was travelling was swept away by floodwater on Wednesday. Police are still searching for two sons who were in the same vehicle while the husband was rescued by the people who witnessed the event.
Ras Al Khaimah Police operation room received a call on Wednesday evening about the accident in the Al Qur valley in Al Munyai area.
Brig. Ghanem Ahmad Ghanem, director of central operations at Ras Al Khaimah Police, said that residents of the area pulled out the man while his wife and three children -- two boys and a daughter -- were swept into the wadi by the surging waters.
Police reported late on Wednesday that the body of the daughter was found, while the search for the two boys are still on. Police managed to recover the body of the woman while the three children are still missing. The man has been admitted to the hospital for treatment.
Ali Saeed Al Dahmani, administrator of the area, told Gulf News that they are working hard with other departments, including the Municipality, to send tankers to clear rain water. The search for the children and still going on, he said.
The husband was driving on a sandy stretch and tried to cross the 500 metre valley but the rain water swept their vehicle, the official said. Meanwhile, Brigadier Ghanem said that RAK Police has deployed more patrols to control traffic at the areas hit by the seasonal showers, and urged drivers to take precautions.
“The valleys are filled with rain water. People should avoid the valleys and slippery roads, and contact the central operations room in case of emergency,” he said.
