No Salaries, Expired Visas

17 August 2015 Kuwait

Several air conditioning maintenance workers at Kuwait University on Sunday staged a protest action due to non-payment of their salaries for the second time in five months, reports Al-Seyassah daily quoting sources. Sources revealed the workers have yet to receive their salaries for three consecutive months while 35 of them have expired visas.

The number of affected workers totaled 300 and the problem was caused by the company that employed them as it failed to remit their salaries on time, sources said. Sources confirmed the university officials are concerned about the development, so they had a meeting with officials of the company to address the issue. Sources explained the university administration took over payment of salaries during the previous protest, so it was surprising when the problem recurred.

Sources added the university asked the company to find a lasting solution and it should not make empty promises, especially since the workers whose visas have expired will most likely be deported.
