Opposition Mps Call For Legal Changes To End Sports Suspensions
Eleven opposition MPs in Kuwait have demanded an emergency session to discuss legislative changes required to lift a ban on the country participating in international sports competitions.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and football governing body FIFA suspended Kuwait from international sports in 2015, accusing the Kuwaiti government of interference in its National Olympic Committee. The allegations prompted Kuwait to file a $1 billion lawsuit for damages in Swiss courts in June.
Also in June, Kuwait’s National Assembly was reported to have approved amendments to its sports laws in an effort to lift sanctions, but all the legal changes have not yet been ratified.
This week, Kuwait MPs called for a meeting to discuss the proposed changes, local media said. They have asked for the meeting to take place on Wednesday just days before the deadline for an ultimatum for Kuwait to correct its sports legislation in order to participate in the 2019 Asian Cup, according to Kuwait Times.
During the assembly’s opening session on December 11, lawmakers called on the government to take the necessary action to lift the restrictions, the newspaper said.
In turn, the government said it was willing to discuss solutions with international sports bodies as long as the solutions do not breach Kuwait’s constitution, minister of information and youth Sheikh Salman Al Humoud Al Sabah was quoted as saying.
In the past few months, the government dissolved several sports federations including the Kuwait Olympic Committee and Kuwait Football Association over alleged financial and administrative violations.
