Petrol Prices To Remain In Place Despite Court Order
Despite Wednesday’s ruling by the Administration Court in Kuwait ordering the government to abolish its recent decision to increase petrol prices, vehicle owners will not see any immediate slash in prices at the pumps, as the government is likely to appeal the decision.
The court’s ruling came following a petition filed by attorney Nawaf Al-Fazai, who had claimed that the government’s decision to increase prices were carried out without appropriate studies on the price hikes and were hastily implemented. The court ordered the government to immediately rescind the price increases on the grounds that the decision was procedurally flawed.
Meanwhile, National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim has extended an invitation to the government and parliamentarians to meet next week to discuss the rise in fuel prices. “The Parliament seeks to protect citizens and ensure that they remain unaffected by the increase in fuel prices,” stated the Speaker.
Political analysts believe the government could end up annulling the fuel price hike for citizens, in the same way that it had shielded citizens from the proposed electricity price increases, which are set to come into force next year.
