Power Cuts Hit Kuwait As Mercury Rises

18 July 2016 Kuwait

Seven districts in Kuwait were affected by power cuts on Sunday, as local temperatures rose to over 50 degrees. That the outages took place in several locations in Kuwait City and beyond, including Surra, Zahra and Salwa, and that call centres had been inundated with complaints.

The newspaper said that emergency teams had restored power to the affected areas, in some cases using giant generators to restore power.

It also said that daily consumption of electricity in Kuwait had reached a record of 12,600 megawatts (MW) this year, while capacity provided by the Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) had increased capacity to 13,000MW a day.

Power outages are not uncommon in the Gulf state. Last year, Kuwait’s water and electricity minister, Abdulaziz Al Ibrahim, resigned a month after a widespread outage hit the country on 11 February.

At the time, Ibrahim had attributed the outage to a technical failure at a power station.

After the incident, lawmakers had called for the minister to answer questions in parliament.
