Knowledge Workshop Introduction To Rhino 3D Modeling

Reyada would like to introduce an upcoming “Knowledge Workshop: Introduction to Rhino; a 3D modeling software program” in collaboration with Shahab Al-Bahar. The course focuses on attaining a comfort level in Rhino but also shows how the program can be used in sync with other programs such as Illustrator and Photoshop to create comprehensive and appealing representational outcomes.

Instructor Background:

Shahab is currently a faculty member teaching design & theory of architecture at Kuwait University’s College of Architecture. He earned his Master in Landscape Architecture from Harvard & prior dual Bachelors in Architecture & Fine Arts from RISD. He also is co-managing director of Inmaginative Ltd, a consultancy firm aimed for those interested in pursuing degrees in design gain admission to top programs in the US. He is planning on advancing his studies & earning a PhD in planning. He truly believes in the agency design holds in empowering & advancing society. His dream is to establish an art & design institution in the Gulf, the first of its kind in providing a platform that facilitates the pedagogy of innovation through experimenting & collective thinking.

Day 1:

Introduction to Rhino. Students will be familiarized with the interface; on how to set up their tool bars and viewports and maneuvering in the program. The task will ask students to use basic commands such as Line, Polyline, Offset and Join to draft measurable orthographic plans and sections of an assigned built project.

Day 2:

Planar Surfaces. Students will be introduced to the basics of creating planar surfaces and regular volumes on Rhino. They will then be given the task of using their 2D drawings from Day 1 to create a 3D structure.

Day 3:

Complex Surfaces. Students will learn how to create surfaces from complex curves. Commands such as Loft, Patch, Sweep Rail, Mesh will be employed. The task will ask students to create a complex topography in which they will site their 3D structure from Day 2.

Day 4:

Introduction to V-ray for Rhino. Students will learn how to create simple renderings using the plugin V-ray. They will understand how to set up a view, position the sun and manipulate the camera settings to achieve desirable render outputs. The task will ask them to create a presentation board of rendered plans, sections and perspectives and overlay line work on Illustrator. They will learn how to extract and export line work from Rhino to Adobe programs.

Day 5:

Pattern and Manipulation. This workshop is a leeway to parametric design. It will ask students to create 3D patterns on Rhino and introduce them to the command Array. They will then Project their patterns on the surfaces created in Day 3.
