12 Opposition Mps Discuss Several Issues Against Information Minister And State Minister
A total of 12 opposition MPs met Monday in the office of MP Mohammed Al-Hayef at the Parliament to discuss several issues including the interpellation motion against Information Minister and State Minister for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Sabah Salem Al-Humoud Al-Sabah. MPs Mohamed Al-Hayef, Abdulwahab Al- Babtain, Thamer Al-Suwait, Hamoud Al-Khudair, Marzouq Al-Khalifa, Osama Al-Shaheen, Al-Humaidi Al-Subaiei, Waleed Al-Tabtabaei, Khalid Al-Otaibi, Majed Al-Mutairi, Nayef Al- Mirdas and Mohammed Al-Mutair attended the meeting; while MP Jamaan Al-Harbash and two others apologized for their absence because they are currently outside the country. In a statement after the meeting, Al-Mutair disclosed they agreed to form a committee that will meet every two weeks to tackle various issues and priorities.
On the other hand, Al-Merdas has warned about the dire consequences of the Defense Ministry’s plan to acquire Russian tanks and aircraft. If this deal pushes through, it will lead to crisis and confrontation between the Parliament and government, he said. He confirmed the opposition MPs talked about the deal during their meeting on Monday, disclosing he advised Defense Minister Sheikh Mohamed Al- Khaled against the Russian arms deal. In a related development, the MPs who submitted the grilling request against Sheikh Salman Al-Humoud rehearsed for the interpellation which will be discussed in Tuesday’s session.
MP Waleed Al-Tabtabaei affirmed their readiness for the grilling which, he clarified, is aimed at ensuring the implementation of reforms. He also urged the minister to prove his ability to respond to the grilling points. MP Abdulwahab Al-Babtain admitted he does not know if the requirement to have 10 signatures for the no-confidence motion has been reached, calling on his fellow MPs to listen to their arguments first before taking a decision. In addition, MPs Safa Al-Hashem, Ahmed Nabil Al-Fadel, Saleh Ashour, Khalil Al-Saleh and Khalid Al-Shatti submitted the ‘Shia Jafariya’ Personal Status Bill comprising of eight chapters with 518 articles.
In the explanatory text of the bill, the lawmakers pointed out that Kuwait is a pioneer in the judicial field and its judicial system is known to be impartial in addressing the needs of citizens and residents. However, the lawmakers found certain shortcomings particularly the 12th Ja’fari jurisprudence so they presented the bill to cover all provisions of the Ja’fari Doctrine as follows: betrothal, elements of marriage, alimony, relatives support, recalcitrance, irrevocable divorce, revocable divorce, death, contract cancellation, birth and parentage, care, endowment, inheritance and veil.
