401 People Dead In 2018 Traffic Accidents
The statistics issued by the General Traffic Department said a total of 401 people – citizens and residents – died in traffic accidents during 2018, reports Al-Qabas daily.
According to the statistics, the mortality rate due to collisions, overturning of vehicles and accidents of various types of vehicles decreased last year, compared to 2017, which killed 424 people. The statistics showed the traffic accidents killed 429 people in 2016, which confirms the decline in the number of deaths due to intensive media campaigns, which highlighted the need to exercise caution while driving and abide by traffic rules to protect the life and property of people.
On the other hand, Assistant Undersecretary for Supportive Medical Services at the Ministry of Health, Fawaz Rifai, said 91,265 urgent cases were transferred to public hospitals last year through emergency medical operations, 57,812 of them non-urgent cases, 53,898 were treated at the site of the accident.
Al-Rifa’i said the air ambulance dealt with 496 reports and 97 cases of medical evacuation in 2018. He indicated the Emergency Medical Administration organized mock accidents in collaboration with other parties including 13 exercises in residential buildings and the Ministry of Health facilities, 5 exercises to evacuate government institutions and 18 evacuation drills at government schools in coordination with the Fire Services Directorate.
Al-Rifai pointed out the objectives of participating in the exercises was to respond quickly and efficiently to emergency situations, to develop contingency plans. He explained the Emergency Medical Department covered more than last year’s events, such as the Gulf Cup, national holidays, the International Conference on Iraq Reconstruction, the Gulf Athletics Championships, the Third Arab Water Conference and the Supreme Council for Islamic Financial Services.
