65 Expat women arrested in clampdown on cafes in Kuwait

The police apprehended them around midnight as they were working illegally at cafes in the district of Hawali, and referred them to the Residence Affairs Directorate. This is the second police crackdown on cafes employing illegal workers and runaway housemaids following the decision of a tripartite committee set up by the Kuwaiti cabinet to ban women from working at cafes.

Committee chairman Mohammed Jaloud Al-Dhafiri said that most of the women who were caught turned out to be runaway housemaids. He announced that the inspections would be stepped up in the coming days until to make sure cafes employ no women. Café owners who break the law repeatedly would face permanent closure.
