The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has begun its annual assembly themed “humanity strength” in Antalya, Turkey, to discuss boosting coordination and electing nominees for the union senior posts.

A delegation from Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS), headed by Chairman Dr Hilal Al-Sayer, took part in the opening session of the seven- day event, on Sunday. Participating delegations will elect candidates to senior IFRC posts, tackle current humanitarian issues on the regional and international arenas, discuss means of boosting ties among the IFRC member states to offer better humanitarian aid to societies affected by political conflicts and natural disasters throughout the world, Dr Al-Sayer said in remarks to KUNA. He emphasized importance of Kuwait’s active participation in all IFRC meetings, expressing his support to all Arab candidates ranking posts of the international federation.

The election session will be held later for a number of administrative posts in the IFRC board of directors. Dr Al-Sayer took part in a news conference held by Turkish Red Crescent Society General Director Karam Kink, with The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Deputy Director General, Balthaza Steheleen. Kink warned of consequences from declining global humanitarian aid this year, shedding light on importance of offering sufficient relief for 65 million displaced people and 350 million who became homeless due to violence.

A total of 150 million people in the world are in dire need for basic needs, he said, praising Turkey for cherishing a distinguished position among states offering humanitarian aid worldwide. IFRC current meeting will discuss “a road map and new vision for 2030,” he added.

For his side, Steheleen expressed his appreciation for the humanitarian efforts exerted by Turkey; as a nation that hosts millions of refugees coming from surrounding nations. He shed light on the need for humanitarian aid to relieve people affected by the continuous wars and armed conflicts in many countries like Syria, Iraq and Yemen, calling for treating unarmed people humanely.
