The Court of Appeals chaired by Counselor Adel Huwaidi amended the verdict of the Criminal Court and sentenced a Kuwaiti and his wife and another Kuwaiti to 10 years imprisonment with hard labor, the fourth accused Kuwaiti to three years and released the fifth accused (a Syrian) citing lack of evidence, reports Al-Rai daily.
The daily added, all the men and the woman and a Syrian – believed to be members of the DAESH or the socalled Islamic State – were arrested and charged with plotting to blow up Ja’afar ibn Abi Talib mosque. The daily added, the Kuwaiti couple was arrested in the Philippines and extradited to Kuwait.
The Criminal Court had sentenced the main accused to 15 years imprisonment with hard labor, the second and third to 10 years with hard labor and acquitted the fourth defendant, a Syrian, identified only as A.H. and the fifth to three years.
The court of appeals, during a public hearing, accused the defendants of joining the banned DAESH organization which pursues the extremist Takfiri ideology and plotting against the authorities of the state, calling for disobedience, destroy its basic systems and forcibly disrupting the existing social and economic systems in the country.
This is in addition to the abuse of one of the means of communication ‘mobile phones’ and accused the first to third defendants of intentionally committing the crime which could prejudice the unity of the country and disturb its territorial integrity.
The first and second defendants were charged with manufacturing explosives and the third with monitoring and making the videos of Shiite mosques. He was also accused of making a video clip of the Ja’afar ibn Abi Talib mosque in preparation for the bombing.
