Children Wrestling Contest Was Stopped By Juvenile Police
Upon a complaint filed by lawyer Hussein Al-Abdullah with the Juvenile Prosecution on children engaged in a wrestling competition organized by a sports company, the Attorney-General Counselor Mubarak Al-Rifaie ordered the juvenile police to stop the event and interrogate the organizers, reports Al-Jarida daily.
During interrogations, police discovered the event was organized without permission. The sources added the head of the juvenile prosecution Nasser Al-Sumait met with the Higher Committee for Childhood, and it was agreed that the latter would set conditions for the sport of wrestling to allow children 12 years and above to participate provided no violence is allowed in addition to wearing head gear and protection.
The sources stressed in the event of non-compliance with these standards, the organizers and parents will be held responsible and charged with violating the children’s law and exposing them to dangers. Earlier, the Kuwait National Society for Protection of Children (KNSPC) had denounced a video clip, which had gone viral on various social media platforms, showing children engaged in a wrestling competition organized by a sports company.
In a press statement, the society had even expressed astonishment over the way the innocence of children was transformed through the so-called ‘children wrestling competition’ as the children were engaged in different fighting techniques and practices which promoted violence.
The society stressed the law guarantees the children’s right to exist and grow in a healthy environment with various preventive and protective measures in place to shield them from all forms of violence, harm and physical abuse.
The society had then called on official bodies, especially the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor and Public Authority for Youth and Sports, to take the necessary steps to eliminate practices deemed harmful to children.
