The spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Kuwait Ma Cheng affirmed that reports about the detention of around one million ethnic Uighurs in her country in a secret camp are not true, stressing that her country respects religious freedom and freedoms of minorities, reports Al-Rai daily. During a press conference at the Chinese Embassy on Thursday, she explained that the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) has recognized China’s achievements and its implementation of the convention.
CERD reviewed China’s report on the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination in Geneva on August 10-13 and acknowledged China’s progress in protecting the rights and interests of national minorities. “Human rights for all” is what the Chinese government and people are working towards. Since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and through tireless efforts, the Chinese people have realized unprecedented achievements in human history.
They launched an oriental path towards modernization, implementation of universal principles of human rights in consideration of China’s special circumstances, increased progress in democracy and people’s well-being as well as promotion of harmony between peace and development. Cheng said, “We have set up a path for the development of human rights with Chinese characteristics,” she said. She highlighted that the reports on the detention of one million Uighurs are false and are fake news being peddled by some news agencies.
Cheng indicated that China managed to meet the basic livelihood needs of its 1.3 billion people, raised more than 700 million people from poverty, and provided 770 million jobs. She explained that some anti- China forces have raised unjustified charges against China for political purposes.
Some foreign media is soiling China’s measures against terrorism and crimes in Xinjiang with evil agenda through their distorted reports of the CERD review because they have hidden motives. Cheng insisted that, “Xinjiang enjoys social stability, economic growth and harmonious coexistence among different nationalities. People of all national groups in Xinjiang cherish a peaceful and prosperous life. Any rumor or slander will have no meaningful results”.
She revealed that, among the 56 minority races in China, there are ten Muslim races, adding that the citizens of these races are spread throughout various provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government’s administration. Cheng said the total number of Muslims in China is more than 20 million, and the number of mosques is more than 40,000. It is worth mentioning that the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, the largest Muslim region in China, has a population of 13 million.
