The Court of Cassation sentenced a fourth-year student of the College of Sharia in Kuwait University to three-year imprisonment for posting alleged malicious statements against Saudi Arabia on his Twitter account. The Public Prosecution charged the student for publicly violating the rights of His Highness the Amir and insulting his constituted authority, as well as for attacking a foreign government (Saudi Arabia) on Twitter without seeking consent of the government. The act was regarded as capable of straining diplomatic relationship between the sisterly countries. He was also accused of broadcasting false information about the situation in Kuwait on social media, which was regarded as tantamount to undermining the authority. He was also charged with deliberately misusing social media by committing the crime in question.
