Iom Reveals No Complaints Received On Delay In Payment Of Salaries To Expats
Head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Kuwait Eman Erekat revealed that the organization has not received any complaints concerning delays in payment of salaries to expatriates in some companies, reports Aljarida daily. She affirmed that Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor and the Public Authority for Manpower have a mechanism for receiving complaints, stressing, “We have confidence in the keenness and dedication of the ministry concerning the labor rights”.
Erekat said this in response to questions asked by the daily concerning the crisis of salary delays in some companies wherein the delays exceed six months in some cases, as well as the possibility of the organization’s intervention to solve this humanitarian crisis.
Concerning the organization’s cooperation with the shelter center for migrant laborers affiliated to Ministry of Social Affairs, she affirmed that the shelter center is considered forerunner in the global level, and is in par with international shelters due to the availability of excellent facilities for the residents. Erekat explained that the organization trains the employees in the shelter on how to receive complaints and cases, and provide support to the aggrieved.
There are projects currently being executed by the organization and those in charge of the shelter center. The shelter center currently accommodates almost 600 residents. She highlighted the concern that officials in the country, embassies and ambassadors have towards the cases received by the shelter center, which ascertains the civility aspect of Kuwait. Erekat revealed that the ministry is inclining towards the idea of establishing shelters for men and women who are victims of the human trafficking as well as those who are mistreated by their employers. She said, “Kuwait has come a long way in providing aid to residents of the shelters”.
