2 Kuwaitis And 4 Syrians Have Been Taken Into Custody In Acquiring Citizenship By Fraud Case

25 April 2019 Kuwait

After the Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Lt-Gen Sheikh Khalid Al-Jarrah issued instructions to the Undersecretary of the Ministry Lt General Essam Al-Nham to follow up the issue of forged citizenship and arrest the suspects , the sources said the two Kuwaitis, who added the four Syrians to their files have been taken into custody and the third is said to have died after committing the fraud, reports Al-Rai daily.

According to the sources, the Department of Research and Follow-up (Nationality Investigations), through its confidential sources discovered that the father, a Syrian citizen with four children had paid KD 100,000 to three Kuwaitis to ‘buy’ citizenship for his four sons.

The sources said after the forgery was discovered an Inquiry Commission was formed to keep a track of the Syrian father who had decided to leave the country so as not to reveal his identity and settled in Syria and frequented the country from time to time to retain his residence permit.

However, a few days ago the Directorate of Research and Follow-up obtained permission from the Public Prosecutor’s Office to arrest the accused before leaving the country.

After he was referred for interrogation, he admitted that he had agreed with three Kuwaitis to make false statements with the General Directorate of Nationality and Travel Documents and succeeded in getting the citizenship for his four sons.

The investigation further revealed one of the sons had got a scholarship at the expense of the Ministry of Higher Education, another worked in the Ministry of Electricity and Water, a third joined the military, and a fourth worked in a private company and benefited from the labor support benefits.

The four based on their forged nationality also obtained bank loans. After they were arrested they admitted that they are Syrians and lived with their parents before getting the Kuwaiti nationality.

The sources pointed out that the Syrian father has given information about other Syrians who have fraudulently acquired the Kuwaiti nationality.

The General Directorate of Nationality and Travel Documents said all those who have acquired the nationality by submitting forged documents have been referred to the Central Prison and a report has been submitted for withdrawing their citizenship.

Informed sources revealed that in 2005 the Kuwaiti was accused of counterfeiting and the Syrian father was assisted by an employee in the Al-Nuwaiseeb port, in return for a sum of money, to register a fake exit from the port. The employee has been arrested upon a warrant issued by the Public Prosecution and referred to authorities for interrogation.
