Kuwait May Reduce Number Of Filipino Diplomats

24 April 2018 Kuwait

Kuwaiti Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al Jarallah said that his country could reduce the number of Filipino diplomats following "violations and statements" by officials in the Philippines.

Addressing the Arab Media Forum, which concluded yesterday, he ruled out relations between the two countries would be severed, according to KUNA.

"The standoff with the Philippines is fabricated and the officials in Manila are the ones who started this current standoff," Al Jarallah said.

"There are a large number of Filipinos who have been living in peace for years in this country (Kuwait), so it is quite strange this issue develops so fast," he added.

Al Jarallah said the ministry asked the Philippines Ambassador to hand over the embassy staff who helped Filipino domestic workers to escape from their sponsors' homes.

"The ultimatum given to the Filipino ambassador will expire tomorrow (Tuesday)," he said, adding "a decisive and direct response on the embassy's action if this issue continues to be unsolved".

He said the Ministry of interior had already arrested four people involved in helping the workers escape from their employers in breach of the law and diplomatic norms.
