Kuwaiti Hezbollah Supporters To Face Legal Action - Kuwaiti Security Source

23 March 2016 Kuwait

Kuwaitis who support or deal with the Lebanese militia Hezbollah will face legal action, Kuwait has warned as the country has stressed its relentless pursuit of supporters of terror groups. A Kuwaiti security source said that all manifestations of support to the group are being closely monitored, mainly among the Lebanese, Syrian and Iraqi communities and Kuwaiti citizens.

“Dealing or sympathising with any banned group or classified as terrorist, including Hezbollah, will result in punitive action,” the source said.

“Foreigners will be expelled and Kuwaitis will be referred to the public prosecution on charges of promoting and dealing with a terror group,” the source said. Dealing with Kuwaiti supporters is classified under two categories, the source added.

“Those who are well known for their support to terror groups, but are not actually voicing it or translating it into action will continue to be monitored by the competent state agencies. The second category is that of people who openly express and voice their support and sympathy on social media or at forums, in Kuwait or abroad,” the source said.

Electronic monitoring has been intensified since the classification of Hezbollah as a terrorist group and include bogus social media accounts, the source added.

Kuwait has been applying a zero-tolerance policy towards anyone who supports Hezbollah or other terror groups that includes not renewing their residency permits or blacklisting their names in order not to allow them to enter the country.

The source said that around 100 people from Lebanon and Syria have so far been expelled or asked to leave the country and that the number of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) citizens who were banned was low.

“There is a constant monitoring of the situation to ensure that the law is thoroughly and fairly applied, taking into consideration the higher interests of the nation, but without prejudice to the rights of people,” the source added. The GCC, made up of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and the Arab League this month classified Hezbollah as a terrorist group.
