Moh Announced 80 Percent Of Nurses Performed Very Poorly
Following the announcement made by the Minister of Health Dr Jamal Al-Harbi to bring in about 2,600 new nurses from overseas for covering the needs of the ministry, informed sources revealed that 80 percent of the nurses who were brought into the country in the last three years performed very poorly with results ranging between 9 percent to 43 percent in the entry tests conducted by the government hospitals.
They indicated that the nurses who performed poorly in the tests were brought in to work in sensitive departments such as the Cardiology Unit and operating theaters where personnel with good experience and high level of skills are required. The sources explained that such new nurses are usually sent to Adan Hospital or Farwaniya Hospital for probation and training, after which they are distributed to the abovementioned departments.
The nurses undergo interviews before they arrive in Kuwait but it was discovered that their skill levels are surprisingly very low, due to which they have to be given intensive training before they are sent to work in the sensitive departments.
This as a whole represents a burden for Ministry of Health. The sources went on to explain that nurses are generally divided into three classes — A, B and C. Nurses of class A are employed in sensitive departments which require them to have special training and good experience.
They receive a salary of KD 750 per month. Class B is a medium level and nurses of this class usually work in the internal wards. Class C is the lowest level and nurses of this class usually work in the outpatient departments. Nurses of this class do not require high experience and offer simple services. The salary of class B nurses is KD 50 lesser than the salary of class A nurses.
The salary of class C nurses is KD 50 lesser than the salary of class B nurses. However, class A nurses receive a total of about KD 70 as infection allowance, danger allowance and night shift allowance. This means the nurses working in the outpatient department earn KD 235 lesser than the class A nurses in a month. The sources wondered how the ministry employs lowskilled nurses to work in sensitive departments and then pay them a monthly salary of KD 765.
