Mp Submitted A Proposal To Prohibit Doctors Engaged In Private Practice

In a bid to stop what he described as ‘manipulations’ in committees in charge of decisions regarding overseas treatment, MP Omar Al-Tabtabaei submitted a proposal to prohibit doctors engaged in private practice from being members of these committees.

He explained some members of these committees, who are engaged in private practice, rejected the requests of patients to undergo treatment abroad despite the severity and rarity of the illness as they want the patients to continue treatment in their private clinics.

He said these private clinics administer useless treatments for patients who need specialists that are not available in the country. He asserted such acts have aggravated the situation and depleted the financial resources of patients.

Furthermore, the government recently announced its decision to form a committee tasked to assess the credentials of government employees. Chairman of the parliamentary Education Affairs Committee MP Abdullah Al-Ruwaei said this is a good step towards reform although it would have been better if the committee was formed earlier.

He pointed out the credentials issue has created large corruption pockets, weighing down every government sector. He suggested the aforementioned step must be followed by a sustainable program and rigid supervision to ensure it yields the desired results.

On the other hand, MP Safaa Al-Hashem described the decision as “comic” because the intention is for the Cabinet to close its case file and then pass on full responsibility to the head of the committee rather than the implementation of reforms.

She believes the situation does not require formation of a committee, but revelation of the names of the guilty and recovery of public funds spent on these individuals unlawfully. She added the prime minister should obligate each minister to open the same case file in every authority and institution under his jurisdiction.
