‘no Cause For Panic’ – Molluscum Contagiosum Common Skin Disease
The Ministry of Health (MoH), represented by the head of the dermatology department at the Jahra Hospital, dermatologist and skin biologist Dr Mohammed Al- Otaibi, assured the visitors of the swimming pools in the resorts that the “infectious disease (molluscum contagiosum) is a common skin disease that is clinically diagnosed easily and that the infection does not cause anxiety or panic, reports Al-Rai daily.
“The incidence of the disease is increasing among swimmers, patients with immunodeficiency and structural eczema,” said Al-Otaibi, adding that “there is no cause for panic.” “The disease is a common contagious skin disease, affecting males, females and young people, especially at school age, with about 6 percent of all cases, and the disease does not affect children under the age of 12 months because of immunity from the mother.”
He pointed out that the available statistics indicate that the incubation period of the virus causing the infection, ranges from fourteen days and six months, and that most areas of the body are prone to infection in the hands, face, neck and chest, especially the armpits, but that does not prevent on the abdomen and back areas and genitalia.
The disease appears in the form of small, stiff, pearly papules with a diameter of between 1 by 1 cm, high on the surface of the skin, and around it a limited red halo. It may be accompanied by itching, and there are some cases where the size is larger to resembling skin tumor. He explained that the disease is easily diagnosed clinically.
The disease has a time period of may be up to about 6 to 9 months but in some cases the disease may continue for long periods of up to 3 and 4 years.
