19 July 2019 International

The Filipina nurse awarded the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) said she found it hard to believe that she received the recognition.

Joy Ongcachuy, of the Royal London Hospital, was part of the staff that attended to those who were injured in a terrorist attack in June 2017, an assault that included a vehicle being rammed into pedestrians and a knife attack.

During the conferment ceremony in April, Ongcachuy recalled how “surreal” it was to personally meet British royalty.

“I cannot express enough how grateful I am,” she said.

Ongcachuy, born in Talisayan town, Misamis Oriental, remembered what it felt like to come face to face with Prince Charles.

“He told me before we shook hands, ‘You did a great job during the incident. Congratulations,’ ” Ongcachuy said.

The OBE is an order of chivalry bestowed upon citizens for their extraordinary contributions in public and community service, as well as arts and sciences, and in charitable and welfare organizations
