MP Safa’a Al-Hashem and Egyptian Minister of Immigration and Expatriate Affairs Nabila Makram recently engaged in a verbal political altercation over the video clip posted on social media showing an Egyptian woman and her children being beaten by a mob of Kuwaiti women who also threatened to deport the family.

Commenting on the altercation, Parliament Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim pointed out “a certainty cannot be emphasized even further,” referring to the deep-rooted relations between the State of Kuwait and the Arab Republic of Egypt. He clarified the statements of parliamentarians reflect their own points of view, and this is exactly what Al-Hashem did. He said criticism within the confines of mutual political respect is fine, but some of the responses to Al-Hashem went beyond these confines and are unacceptable. “I am sure our Egyptian counterparts agree on this,” he asserted; adding that this issue has passed. “We should not derail efforts to strengthen historic ties, especially during these times,” he stressed.

In another development, the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee on Sunday drafted a bill on exempting the deceased from paying housing loans obtained from Kuwait Credit Bank (KCB), and a bill on regulation of insurance and supervision protocols.

Committee Rapporteur MP Faisal Al-Kandari said in a press conference at the National Assembly Media Center that State Minister for Housing and Services Affairs Jenaan Bo Shehri and KCB General Manager Salah Al-Mudhaf who was accompanied by a technical team attended the meeting. He affirmed the abovementioned bills will be subjected to comprehensive revision and analysis, in coordination with all the concerned parties, in order to build a structure based on the principles of justice and equality and to prevent misusage of public funds.

Talking about the bill on regulating insurance and supervision protocols, Al-Kandari disclosed the bill consists of several articles that need amendments, considering Kuwait falls behind in this area compared to other countries. He pointed out the reports issued by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other evaluation and insurance institutions included many reservations on the current Insurance Law which was enacted in 1961.

He said the committee is keen on finalizing the bill in line with international economic structures; while announcing the formation of an expanded technical team whose members are from the committee, Ministry of Commerce, Kuwait Insurance Federation, and Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry, to formulate an integrated law.

Furthermore, the parliamentary committee tasked to investigate the flood crisis met Sunday, expressing its readiness to receive all other concerned committees to discuss their reports.

State Minister for Housing and Services Affairs Jenaan Bo Shehri affirmed the reports of the governmental technical committees are ready, including the one addressing the flood in Sabah Al-Ahmad City.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Committee Chairman MP Adel Al-Damkhi unveiled the committee’s plan to prioritize the accountability of concerned officials, which will be followed by recommendations on granting compensation and preventing the recurrence of floods.

He added the committee will discuss the issue again on Sunday with representatives of Kuwait Society for Engineers and State Audit Bureau in attendance.
