Gcc Ministers Propose Unified Decision On Domestic Workers

18 November 2018 Kuwait

The Gulf Cooperation Council’s (GCC) Ministers of Labor and Social Affairs Committee concluded its fourth meeting and referred its recommendations to the concerned officials for approval, including the proposed unification of decisions regarding domestic workers, reports Al-Rai daily.

Kuwait’s Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Hind Al-Sabeeh disclosed the committee presented several recommendations, such as the unified approach on domestic workers in terms of organizational rules to address the negative comments of international organizations.

The committee also suggested unification of recruitment cost, salary and privileges given to domestic workers. Al-Sabeeh explained, “These recommendations entail organizing discussions with countries which provide domestic workers. Anything concerning this sector will be addressed by a single entity — the GCC, not every country with its individual rules.”

Al-Sabeeh added the committee recommended laying down a rule for each GCC country regarding people with disabilities and volunteering work. She said the recommendations will be referred to the leaders of GCC countries for approval. On the automated service for recruitment of domestic workers, Al-Sabeeh affirmed the system is in place, although it has yet to be linked with local banks to facilitate payment of charges as well as the domestic labor recruitment bureaus. She confirmed that in the coming period, a mechanism will be implemented to monitor these recruitment bureaus.
