Highest Level Of Air Pollution Recorded - Epa Denies

02 August 2018 Kuwait

The country recently recorded the highest air pollution level at 301 based on the Air Quality Index (AQI), while the temperature reached 43 degrees
Celsius, local Arabic news paper Al-Qabas daily reported. However, the

Kuwait Environment Public Authority dismissed the report and affirmed that the air quality indicators were meeting EPA’s criteria.

According to local daily report, AQI is divided into six categories indicating increasing levels of healthconcern. An AQI of more than 300 means hazardous air quality while below 50 entails that the air quality is good.

While EPA director of public relations and media Sheikha Al-Ibrahim told KUNA the reports were based on readings by a monitoring station at the US Embassy in Kuwait, which was comparing its readings to American standards, which were different than those in Kuwait.

The US Embassy monitoring station reading was measuring dust particle’s size at 100 microns per hour, she said, but Kuwait’s standards were 350 microns.

Al-Ibrahim said Kuwait was subjected to year-long dust storms, quite natural for the North Gulf country, the Gulf and Middle East regions. “These factors are not caused by human or industrial activities in the state,” she added.

She said EPA would soon launch an application showing the air quality and its limits.
