Philippines Lifts Deployment Ban To Kuwait

The Philippine government has lifted the deployment ban of Filipino migrant workers to Kuwait, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III announced Thursday.

Newly-hired and returning household workers may now return to Kuwait as the government lifts the remaining ban on them.

The Kuwaiti government has already met one of the conditions set by the Philippines, which is to file charges against the employers of slain migrant worker Jeanelyn Villavende, Bello said that Kuwaiti officials have agreed to craft a harmonized standard employment contract for Filipino workers.

The standard contract seeks to prevent abuse with its provisions that include allowing household service workers to keep their passports & mobile phones.

Specifying their work and sleep hours at least 8 hours of rest per day.

Work limited to one household (extra salary/hour if agreed to work in another house) Max 12 hours/day.

Allowing at least one day off a week with pay.

Disallowing their transfer to another employer without their written consent and written approval of the Philippine labor attaché in Kuwait.

Guarantee a minimum monthly salary of KD120.
