Privatisation Plans To Slash Kuwait Debt

07 February 2019 Kuwait

The government is reportedly planning to privatise some ministries and government bodies, Kuwait Times reported.

According to well-informed sources, the plan is part of efforts to shrink the state’s organisational structure, contain deficit and reduce expenditure.

"The ministerial economic committee has agreed to privatise the ministry of services, formerly communications, especially after establishing the telecommunications authority and having telecom and Internet companies take up many of the ministry's responsibilities," said the sources.

They said the government has also prepared a bill on privatising the postal sector and is getting ready to offer a tender for public bidding to private sector companies to provide telephone services by the end of the year.

The sources added various sectors at the ministry of information, including art, production, TV and radio and tourism, would be privatised, leaving only the news sector to be supervised by the ministry.
